SEPARATION PANGS

A duet for a mother and her child that explores the first breaking point we experience in our lives. The understanding that our unity as a mother and a fetus does not exist anymore. The oneness we used to have with another human being will never return. A 30 year old man and a 60 year old

woman meet again just to say goodbye.

In the piece a man-child and a mother-woman, are moving between their roles as a containing loving mother and an ever needing child, into their roles as separate beings. With different wills, understandings and thoughts - that are not dependent on one another.

The piece is a co-creation that integrates the movement and body language brought by the

son-choreographer Gilad Jerusalmy, and the

knowledge of visual art and therapy brought by the artist-mother Renana Jerusalmy. Separation Pangs was born out of the combination of physical research in the studio and dissertation research in the subject of therapy through plaster bandages.

The seeds of the creation sprout from the term created by the psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu - “Skin-Ego” and it's transition into artistic materials. Observing the qualities of the plaster bandages in relation to the skin functions that Anzieu describes, functions that create the outer layers of the soul and mind. Through touch, creation and constructing with the cast over the body, we explore the power of togetherness and the meaning of being separated.
